Middle School at Sundance
We are pleased and excited to announce the expansion of Sundance to include a middle school program beginning in the 2019-2020 academic year. Since the inception of the fifth-grade Galaxies program in 2011, parents have urged administrators to build on and allow their children to continue to experience Sundance’s unique approach to education. We now feel capable of answering that call and will offer a sixth-grade program with 7th and 8th to follow over the following two academic years. Beginning this fall, grades five and up will be considered Sundance Middle School.
It has always been our aim to provide an academically rigorous, highly nurturing, arts-infused environment in which students can explore their interests, gain understanding of themselves, experience success in their learning, and become productive members of the community. We intend to hold to those goals as we endeavor to build our school and provide current and incoming parents with an opportunity to offer their children the most valuable, enriching education available from preschool to grade 8.
We plan to continue all our present academic programs in language arts, math, social studies, science, foreign language, and STEAM, and we will augment them accordingly to address new grade-specific benchmarks. This will include the addition of a science lab.
As students enter the middle school grades, it is expected that they take a greater interest in and control of their learning. It is our intention to foster this by offering elective studies in the areas of foreign language, music, art, and STEM.
We also plan to extend student studies beyond the classroom by integrating more curriculum-related, day-time and overnight trips.
To ensure that our middle school students are on-course socially, emotionally, and academically, we will pair each student with an advisor and integrate weekly meetings into their schedules. This will enable us to track student progress more closely and address their needs more specifically. To keep pace with technology and support increased curricular demands, we will equip all middle school students with iPads.
As always, it is a goal of Sundance, to cultivate civic-minded students. To that end, in addition to some planned local community-outreach activities, we will be introducing the Roots and Shoots program founded by Jane Goodall. The program aims to unite youth around the world through monthly service projects that will “make the world a better place for people, other animals, and the environment.”
We cannot adequately express how humbled we are to be entrusted with the care of your precious children. We hope that this new endeavor will further establish how committed we are to provide the love, support, and guidance necessary to ensure that your children reach their fullest potential.
